Who funds the Westboro Baptists who demonstrate at funerals?
The same group that harasses family members at military funerals all over the country are going to Arizona to protest at the funerals of the victims of the shooter who attacked the congresswoman in Tucson. It must cost a lot of money to travel as much as they do. Could they possibly be employed and take off as much time for their trips as they do? Is someone providing money for their activities?

I have wondered the same thing. Maybe the IRS should investigate this so called “church” (if they haven’t already).

Whoever finances them is going to hide it & is unlikely they will ever “fess up”.
In my area, bikers attend all funerals of all servicemen, law enforcement officers, first responders. They do it not only out of utter respect, but also to be on hand to “deal with” those demonstrators. I have watched them form barriers around funerals to keep the demonstrators at a far distance.
They are heroes who show up to help the families of other heroes not have the terrible experience of those AWFUL GITS who are so selfish that they would make an already miserable experience more so for a grieving & heartbroken family.
There are many things so WRONG with our country today…and those demonstrators who go to funerals are among the very WORST!
They are not part of mainstream baptist churches. They call themselves primitive baptist. Great name for these heathens. Anyway, One of Westboro’s followers estimated that the church spends $ 250,000 a year on picketing. In the 1990s the church won a series of lawsuits against the City of Topeka and Shawnee County for efforts taken to prevent or hinder WBC picketing, and was awarded approximately $ 200,000 in attorney’s fees and costs associated with the litigation. This was one-way. It is a sick family that is for sure.
I don’t know but I’m searching for answer.
There must be a way to form security and keep these people out of the sight of grieving families.
I feel it’s time to take stand.
I’ve wondered about that too. There are only a few members of the WBC, something like a hundred people altogether. Yet their budget for disrupting funerals is estimated to be a quarter million dollars per year. And they’ve been doing this for decades.
Fred Phelps himself is, Him and his family are lawyers. But he has one son who drop out because he got tired of his father doing stuff like this, So the pastor (Fred) paid for all this and they have a bus they travel in…and followers are his relatives and friends. He has a small church and his house is right next door from it..They don’t look like they are very rich dues to them all being lawyers. I also never see anything in the paper about them being hired from anybody so they keep a very low profile on that part..The reason why I know this is because they are on almost every corner in my town being a asshole.. I am surprise they have not been run down or shot at yet..They been doing this for years and they will never give up..and yes they go to all funeral and protest it got so bad here that we have to the bikers who most are veteran of war and the cops out at cemetery’s to keep them back..we get so embarrass about the things he and his followers do, it pitiful. We tried very hard to get rid of him with the government here in our state..but fail..we just ignore him anymore..=)
It seems we’ve all been wondering the same thing. I’d also like to know the tax status of this particular church. Seems to me that once you start taking political stances on issues, your tax-exempt status should be history forever. Of course, I think all churches should be taxed, but that’s not gonna happen in my lifetime…….
George Bush Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney probably. Also all of us do by allowing this Church to be tax exempt we are ALL contributing.
Also by allowing this group of rich lawyers to enjoy the Extension of tax cuts for the wealthy!
They are funded by a network of similarly minded groups. Most are religious, tending toward extremist, most seemed to be hate based. Check out their web page.
They do not break any laws nor cause any damage. As long as they do so, and do not violated the freedoms and rights of others, they can continue. We did not shut down anti war protesters during Vietnam, although Nixon tried. We do not keep Afro-Americans from gathering at the capital. We don’t stop gays from marching the streets. So why oppose these people? They have the same rights as war protesters, gays and minorities. Americans are supposed to be tolerant. Perhaps it is time some of you remember what it really means to be an American. Especially since you are older and supposedly wiser.
So 9 of you fine citizens hate the USA Constitution. Cowards! You either defend freedom of speech or you hate it, whatever, do not call yourself an American.
There used to be a free online book about that family and the father made his children work like little slaves selling things and raising funds. I don’t know about now, one of the daughters is a lawyer and they probably do know what is “legal” but that don’t make it right.
There are bikers here who drown out their protests with motorcycles, and think some cities have laws banning protests groups within a certain distance of funeral homes and cemeteries. They got their tires slashed on one side at a funeral in McAlester, Oklahoma few months ago and no service station in the city would help them, the police escorted them out of town and how they got help was their problem. They probably post guards around their van now.
They just make me sick. I don’t understand why they do things like this. I do know that one way or another, they will end up paying for what they do.
God Love the Bikers!
They’ve had a bad rap for years, some richly deserved.
The good they have done in the past, and continue to do on an ever increasing basis has more than vindicated them for the acts of the few bad ones.
May they be everywhere the Westboro “Baptist” church members flaunt their hate to drown them out, frighten them and render them helpless to be anything other than low minded scum.
Thanks to God for the Bikers!
They have about 100 members, of which about 80% is family. They have about 5 lawyers. They push and push until someone reacts, then they sue…and win.
The only ones that ‘take off’ are a few WOMEN. I was at the funeral of an Army Lieutenant in Williamsburg, Virginia this past September and there were only 4 women and one little boy in sight. Shirley Phelps was one of the women. I think the reason not too many men are in sight because the women are less likely to be attacked for spouting the filth they do about the very military they bad mouth that gives them the right to picket their funerals.
About 15 members of the Patriot Guard Riders formed a flag line behind the women and I was so close behind Shirley Phelps that when the wind blew, the sleeve of her jacket she had tied around her waist would hit me in the back of the leg.
Something a few towns have done is when they find out the area the WBC is permitted to picket in (they have to have a permit from the town), the towns people fill that area up with people and cars so when the WBC shows up, there’s no room for them, so they leave. I hope this becomes a trend.
As far as the PGR is concerned, we only go to funerals when we are invited, unlike the Westboro cult (they are neither Baptist nor a church).
